Hey all! I'm considering carrying a full-size spare in my Audi Q5. However, after reviewing various sources, it appears that the standard spare tire well is designed for a temporary spare, not a full-size one. Even if the foam inserts are removed, the space may not accommodate a full-size tire due to its dimensions.

For those who have considered or implemented carrying a full-size spare, could you share your experiences? What solutions have you found effective? Are there specific modifications or alternative storage options that have worked for you?

If you're dead set on bringing one along, you could go for a roof-mounted carrier or a hitch-mounted spare tire carrier. That way, you don’t have to sacrifice any of the space inside. Just a thought!

Getting a full-size spare in a Q5 is a common desire for those wanting extra preparedness. You're correct the stock spare tire well is too small. People usually end up either putting the spare in the cargo area which takes up a lot of room or using a roof rack mount, which adds weight and affects fuel efficiency. Some people attempt custom modifications to the well but that's a difficult project. Unless you frequently go off-roading in remote areas the inconvenience of carrying a full-size spare might not be worth it. A good tire repair kit and air compressor might be a more practical solution.

The extra weight and space it takes up might not be worth it for everyday driving. Do it only if you are doing a lot of off-roading or traveling in remote areas. I think all you need is a tire repair kit and a compressor.

What's your reason why you considered a full size spare tire?
